Interest in a 1 day Tournament ?
We are gauging interest in a 1 day tournament for Saturday July 18th
Commons 1-4 Looking for 10 teams….just a thought for now. please respond to Mark Flinn Ma ... @Keane.com or Mark Stevens ma ... @arrow.com if you're interested or can field a team. We would like to keep this to our league first , If you are close to the 10 people required , let us know and we can round out the teams with other teams that have extras , our thought here is to not have stacked teams for the tourney

True co-ed try out some new rules 5guys 5 girls

9-6 July 17

Entry fee $75 per team

1st place $100
2 – 75
3 - 50
As for the costs ,they will be minimum over the cost once balls etc are bought. Once we get all the teams confirmed we can do a budget. For 10 teams Fields alone will be $344 + Prize money 225 + $100 on balls , we will only have a surplus of $100 based on 10 teams….We will look at a couple door prizes something along that line

Again if your team is interested please let us know and we will get this going. This will be a good time to keep the rust off while the other fields are closed for the concerts.

Icebreaker and 3 week schedule
Schedule

The schedule is complete for the 1st 3 weeks of the season , each team will have a bye as last year. I only have 3 weeks posted as I want to see how the weather cooperates with us at the beginning and will release the rest of the schedule in the next 2 weeks as I see how our fields are being utilized. Please go to your team page on the website to see.

NO GAMES on Thursday July 1st Canada Day and Monday August 2nd Natal Day or Monday September 6th Labour Day.

Icebreaker
Starts at 10 am be there a bit earlier.

Check the HRM field conditions line tomorrow morning, if the fields are closed then we won't play. I'll be updating the website on Saturday morning before heading out . www.tavernsoftball.com .

If there's no rain before the morning then likely the field condition line won't be updated till 9 am ( I will already be enroute to the fields to chalk them). I will have my phone 440-2655 and can update the website from it. Also Mark Flinn can be reached at 401-8606 . If we do get cancelled , the afterparty at the Red Stag will still be on at 4 pm. The league will have some appetizers and draught supplied for the league members attending. If there is a cancellation we will decide on a reschedule date and location as we will have Labatt product and swag to distribute.

The rain tommorrow is not supposed to start till the morning and it will be isolated spots. It's possible we may only get a few hours in but it's the Maritimes and we all know how the weather here changes.

Weather forecast for tomorrow is :
7am isolated showers
8-11 cloudy with showers
11-2 light rain
2-4 cloudy with showers
4-on cloudy with sunny breaks

So the weather will be perfect for the after party at the Red Stag at 4 pm ( rain or shine)

AGM Summary
AGM Summary

Labatts Sponsorship
1) Labatts to donate 200 beer to Icebreaker Weekend ( Saturday May 15th) . Beer to be sold at $2.50 ea , proceeds to league.

2) Labatts to give every team a flat of beer upon their submission of $200 in receipts on Labatts product ( or their associates Interbrew products) , deadline for this is the midway point of the season ( Let's call it Friday July 30th). Teams that don't collect $200 in Labatts receipts at this point give up their right to a case and the next teams to collect the most Labatts Receipts will be eligible for an extra flat of beer.
Receipts must be dated for any time after the AGM ( Saturday March 20th )
3) Labatts will also reward the team with the most Labatts product receipts with a night at the Atlantic Beer Institute and custom shirts. The number attending will be limited and must be confirmed with Mark Flinn before attending.

4) Labatts will donate 1 Keg of beer to the End of Season Banquet

Reg Stag Sponsorship
The Red Stag will be the leagues primary establishment sponsor this year.
1) They provided a 25% discount on food for the AGM

2) Will provide a 25% discount on food at the Icebreaker after party

3) Will give back to the league $0.20 for every dollar spent at the Red Stag , for either team events or if you ( ball league members) go down on your own with your family or friends .... please save your Red Stag Receipts and submit to Mark Flinn or Mark Stevens to be applied to your team.

4) The team with the highest dollar total in receipts will receive a Pizza and Beer party at the Red Stag along with custom shirts.

Sportswheels Sponsorship

Sportswheels in Sackville is giving our league members a discount on all ball gear . Teams are to purchase their softballs there ( once the league vote is finalized on the type of ball) and scorebooks. We are savin 25% on the cost of these over last year. Mark Flinn has discount coupons for captains to give to team members if needed.
Softballs and scorebooks are not part of the league fees cost that the league requires . We are asking teams to pick them up to help drive traffic to the store.

There are also some other things I will email the captains but this is enough for now.
Fields , Schedule , Volunteer list and some Rules review will be touched on in the coming weeks.

Some commonly misunderstood rules
1) Infield Fly rule- The infield fly rule applies when there are fewer than two outs, and there is a force play at third base (runners on first and second base, or bases loaded). Under these conditions, if a fly ball is hit into fair territory and the umpire perceives that an infielder using ordinary effort would be able to catch the ball, the umpire will call the batter automatically out. Even if the infielder later drops the ball, it makes no difference. As soon as the umpire makes the call, the batter is out and must leave the field.
According to the rule, the umpire is supposed to announce, "Infield fly, if fair." If the ball will be almost certainly fair, the umpire will likely yell, "Infield fly, the batter is out!" Umpires also usually raise one arm straight up to signal to everyone that the rule is in effect.

Players and fans sometimes misunderstand the infield fly rule. The infield fly rule is not in effect if there is a runner on first base only, as the rule-makers assumed fielders would not gain a significant advantage by forcing out the runner rather than the batter; in either case, the net result would be one more out and a runner on first base. Also, an infield fly does not affect baserunners other than the batter.

On a caught infield fly, the runners must tag up (retouch their base at the time of pitch) in order to be eligible to advance, as on any catch. If the infield fly falls to fair ground untouched, or is touched and dropped, runners need not tag up. In either case, since the batter is out, the force play on the other runners is removed.

The infield fly rule does not apply to line drives or bunts. Nor does the rule cover all situations where the defense may wish to allow a fly ball to drop uncaught.

For example, if there is just a runner on first base, a quick-thinking infielder might purposely let a pop-up drop to the ground and get the force at second, if it happens that the runner on first is faster afoot than the batter-runner is, or if the batter is loafing on his way to first base. This is only legal if the fielder lets the ball hit the ground untouched, which carries some risk to the fielder as it might bounce away from him.

However, in all situations where the infield fly rule does not apply, a different rule prevents fielders from touching a catchable ball and dropping it intentionally in an attempt to turn a double or triple play.

2) Ball hit off plate -That the ball struck home plate is of no special relevence. The plate is entirely in fair territory and, on a batted ball, it is treated just like any other patch of dirt on the playing field.

In fact, a ball could come off the bat, land right on top of the plate and just sit there and that would be a fair ball!

3) stepping on plate when advancing to 1st base--You cannot step on the plate with any part of your foot while making contact with the ball but after you hit the ball you can jump up and down on the plate, roll all over it like a dog, have tea on it for all I care (and the rules care), well maybe not tea.--per Dr Mark R.
